Winner Predictions for the CMA Awards

posted on November 6, 2013

It’s that time of year again… the annual CMA, Country Music Association’s awards. I’ve followed country music ever since I can remember. I was 5 when I attended my first concert, Alabama at Opryland. I could go on and on about how much I love this genre of music, but I’ll save it for later. Today, I thought it would be fun to share with you my predictions on who I believe will take home the CMA award tonight in each of the nominated categories below.

*Note: I have put all my feelings for songs/artists aside on my winner picks. Just because I picked the winner doesn’t mean I want them to win. I’ve picked who I honestly believe the industry will vote for.

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR

Taylor Swift • Jason Aldean • George Strait • Blake Shelton • Luke Bryan

My Winner Pick: JASON ALDEAN

Why?: I’m kinda on the fence about this one. I secretly want George to win it, because it’s his “final ride,” but reality is I’ve seen George in concert and he’s not that great of a live entertainer. I feel like Luke has had a GREAT run this year, but I feel Jason has really worked hard and entertained this year with his stadium tours that include Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, and the 66,000 capacity Sanford stadium in Georgia. Jason knows how to bring a crowd to their feet and with these stadium tours under his belt this year I feel makes him the prime artist to receive this award.

MALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR

Blake Shelton • Jason Aldean • Luke Bryan • Keith Urban • Eric Church

My Winner Pick: JASON ALDEAN

Why?: Same reasons I listed above + he had a new (fantastic) album, Night Train released within the last 12 months.

FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR

Taylor Swift • Miranda Lambert • Carrie Underwood • Kacey Musgraves • Kelly Clarkson

My Winner Pick: KACEY MUSGRAVES

Why?: Kacey was on fire this year!!! Her debut album, Same Trailer Different Park was released within the last 12 months and received rave reviews. I personally love Kacey’s album and her songwriting skills. She’s clever, funny and badass. Kacey has been on the radar for quite some time (especially in her home state of Texas), but I feel that her popularity grew immensely this year and I’m happy she’s finally getting her time in the spot light.

VOCAL DUO OF THE YEAR

Big & Rich • Thompson Sqaure • Florida Georgia Line • Love and Theft • Sugarland • The Civil Wars

My Winner Pick: FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE

Why?: This is a no-brainer to me, Florida Georgia Line’s debut album this year was a massive hit, especially with their single, “Cruise” that went 6x platinum! No other duo in this category matches their stats.

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR

Florida Georgia Line • Lee Brice • Kip Moore • Kacey Musgraves • Brett Eldridge

My Winner Pick: FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE or KACEY MUSGRAVES

Why?: This one is going to be REAL close! If I’m going off of stats and record sales, I’d pick FGL. If I’m going off of true songwriting talent and an artist who has truly artistically separated herself from other artists, my vote would be for Kacey Musgraves. If I had to chose, I’d go with Kacey.

VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR

Eli Young Band • Lady Antebellum • Little Big Town • The Band Perry • Zac Brown Band

My Winner Pick: THE BAND PERRY

Why?: I think this group has really come into their own this year and they’re taking risk with their music and showing their true range of vocal/instrumental abilities.

MUSICAL EVENT OF THE YEAR

Florida Georgia Line feat. Nelly, “Cruise”
Tim McGraw feat. Taylor Swift and Keith Urban, “Highway Don’t Care”
Blake Shelton feat. Pistol Annies, “Boys ‘Round Here”
Kelly Clarkson feat. Vince Gill, “Don’t Rush”
Jason Aldean feat. Luke Bryan and Eric Church, “The Only Way I Know”

My Winner Pick: FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE FEAT. NELLY, “CRUISE”

Why?: As much as I love some of the other songs in this category, I have a feeling these boys are going to take home a few trophies tonight. This song was the IT song this year. The stats don’t lie. Over 6 MILLION copies sold!

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Blake Shelton, Based on a True Story
Carrie Underwood, Blown Away
Taylor Swift, Red
Kacey Musgraves, Same Trailer, Different Park
Little Big Town, Tornado

My Winner Pick: Hmmm… well… Lord, I don’t know. I think it comes down to Taylor or Carrie on this one and I’m going to go with Carrie.

Why?: This is one of Carrie’s best albums. There is such a story behind each song and I love how Carrie strays away from the shallow country lyrics that some artists are clinging to these days. Blown Away was fabulous and paired with Carrie’s voice, well that’s perfection my friends.

SINGLE OF THE YEAR

Florida Georgia Line, “Cruise”
Tim McGraw feat. Taylor Swift and Keith Urban, “Highway Don’t Care”
Miranda Lambert, “Mama’s Broken Heart”
Kacey Musgraves, “Merry Go ‘Round”
Darius Rucker, “Wagon Wheel”

My Winner Pick: FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE

Why?: I think my above comments have pretty well answered this.

SONG OF THE YEAR

Lee Brice, “I Drive Your Truck” • Miranda Lambert, “Mama’s Broken Heart” • Kacey Musgraves, “Merry Go ‘Round”  Little Big Town, “Pontoon” • Darius Rucker, “Wagon Wheel”

My Winner Pick: MIRANDA LAMBERT, “MAMA’S BROKEN HEART

Why?: I just have a gut feeling about my pick for this. Kacey Musgraves wrote this song and sang harmony on Miranda’s cut of it. So, if Miranda wins tonight, then it’s a win for Kacey too.

MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR

Carrie Underwood, “Blown Away” • Blake Shelton feat. Pistol Annies, “Boys, ‘Round Here” •  Lady Antebellum, “Downtown” • Tim McGraw feat. Taylor Swift and Keith Urban, “Highway Don’t Care” • Miranda Lambert, “Mama’s Broken Heart” • Little Big Town, “Tornado”

My Winner Pick: CARRIE UNDERWOOD, “BLOWN AWAY”

Why?: Well earlier this year, Carrie won Music Video of the Year for this song at the CMT Music Awards and I just think she’s going to win it again.

Who votes for the winners and how does the voting process work? This should help answer it: http://theboot.com/cma-awards-voters/ . In a nut shell, it’s members of the industry who are members of the Country Music Association.

Who do you think will win what? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Y’all have a great day and tune into to ABC tonight 8/7c.

Amy
