What was on my playlist this week? Brandy Clark
posted on February 1, 2014
I’ve a much over-due “What Was On My Playlist This Week” post to share with y’all today. This past Tuesday, I decided to preview on itunes Brandy Clark’s new album “12 stories” that was just released this past October. I listened fully through all 12 songs once, then again, then again. Literally, around quittin’ time, I said to myself, “I gotta buy this.” So I did, and I ‘ve been playing Brandy’s album EVERY day. To give you a little backstory on Ms. Clark, she’s a singer/ songwriter who has had her work recorded by Reba McEntire, LeAnn Rimes, Kacey Musgraves and Darius Rucker. Within the last year she has celebrated success with “Mama’s Broken Heart” recorded by Miranda Lambert, which Clark helped cowrite and The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two” which she also cowrote. Both songs have gone #1.
Clark has quite the knack for writing clever, gutsy, empowered female centered lyrics . . . and I LOVE it. From a housewife “rolling a fat one” to a woman not being able to pull the trigger on a cheating lover ONLY because she “doesn’t look good in orange . . . and hates stripes.” She talks about the deep, tough stuff that noone wants to talk about and everyday life events that majority of Americans can relate to.
I love Clark because she’s real, doesn’t stray away for hard topics and her songs are so catchy with deep meanings. Y’all know I’m not a huge fan of much of the country stereotypical, get drunk, daisy dukes, shallow lyrics that are ALWAYS on the radio these days. I believe fans deserve something better and I’m happy Brandy has publicly come onto the scene has a singer and not just a behind-the-scenes songwriter.
I love so many of the songs on this album, but one of my favorites is, “Take A Little Pill.”
Also, from the graphic above, here is her 1st single, “Stripes”. One of my favorites as well.
Y’all, take a listen for yourself and let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
Have great weekend and Go Peyton!!
